This is a complicated issue. The most common transmissions for the J6 series were the H42 and the H55F. According to the TLC-FAQ (5), the H55F changed in 1986 (low transfer gear). However, this seems inconsistent with other sources. E.g., the HJ61, which came after 1986, has the pre-1986 low gear. Some more research is needed to sort out this one...
